The Waggon & Horses
Where it all kicks off - bales weighed, nerves jangling, hooter ready.
There is no Straw Race without the pubs. For decades they have thrown open their doors, pulled thousands of pints, and turned race day into the carnival it is. We are endlessly grateful.
From the start line to the final uphill push, these are the pubs that have welcomed teams over the years. Links to each are on their way - if you run one of them, get in touch and we'll add yours.
Where it all kicks off - bales weighed, nerves jangling, hooter ready.
First pint down, spirits high, a long way still to go.
A much-loved stop on the route over the years.
The hill begins to bite - heads down, bales up.
Dig in, nearly there, the crowd carrying you on.
The finish, uphill, to roars from the village. You made it.
Some of these pubs have changed hands or closed over the decades - we remember them all fondly, and thank everyone who has ever hosted a thirsty, straw-carrying team.
For many years, Dave and Eileen Woodhead of Wooden Tops have been there with their cameras, capturing the chaos, the costumes and the camaraderie of the Straw Race - thousands of photos, freely shared, year after year.
Their generosity has given us a priceless record of the race and a great deal of joy. We can't thank them enough.
